Healthy stores typically net 5-15% after everything. A big gross margin with a thin net margin means fees, ads, or fixed costs are eating the business.

Ecommerce Profit FAQ

How do I calculate ecommerce profit?

Net profit = revenue − cost of goods − refunds − platform and payment fees − shipping and fulfillment − ad spend − fixed costs. A store doing 20,000 a month with 8,000 COGS, 2% refunds (400), 5% fees (1,000), 1,500 fulfillment, 3,000 ads, and 2,000 fixed costs nets 4,100 - a 20.5% net margin. Enter your own month above.

What is a good net margin for an online store?

5-15% net is the common range for healthy stores; above 20% is excellent. More useful than the benchmark is the gap between your gross and net margin - a store with 55% gross and 4% net doesn't have a product problem, it has a fees-ads-and-overhead problem, and the fix is different.

Should refunds really come off revenue?

Yes, and most sellers skip it. Returns, refunds, and chargebacks typically run 2-5% of revenue (much higher in fashion). A store that reports revenue before refunds is celebrating money it will give back. Budget the percentage honestly and let the calculator subtract it.

What counts as fixed costs?

Everything that bills you whether or not you sell: store subscription, apps, warehouse rent, staff, accounting, internet. Divide annual items by 12 and include them - fixed costs are why a store can have profitable products and an unprofitable month.

How is this different from a Growpins Ledger account?

This calculator models a month from estimates. Growpins Ledger builds the real thing: sales recorded per order, expenses tracked as they happen, and a P&L report you can hand to a partner or lender - the difference between believing you made 4,100 and knowing it.

From estimated month to real P&L

Growpins Ledger records real sales and expenses as they happen and turns them into P&L and balance-sheet reports - built by the team behind Growpins, founded by Dokun Bamigboye. Free tier, no card required.
