Markup to margin, at a glance

Every markup implies a margin - and it's always smaller. Quote your accountant a "50% markup" and they'll book a 33.3% margin. Here are the common equivalents:

Markup Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate markup?

Markup = (selling price - cost) ÷ cost x 100. Buy at 6,000 and sell at 9,000, and the 3,000 profit is a 50% markup. To go the other way - from cost and a chosen markup to the price - it's price = cost x (1 + markup%), which is what the 'Target markup' mode above does.

What's the difference between markup and margin?

Same profit, different denominator. Markup divides the profit by the cost; margin divides it by the selling price. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin. This calculator always shows both, so you never quote one number while thinking of the other.

What is keystone pricing?

The retail tradition of a 100% markup - selling at double the cost. Buy at 6,000, sell at 12,000. It's a starting convention, not a law: fast-moving or highly competitive goods often carry less, and slow-moving or service-heavy goods more.

What markup should I use?

Work backwards from what the markup has to cover: your fixed costs, selling fees, and the profit you want, spread over realistic sales volumes. The Break-Even Calculator tells you the volume side; the Product Pricing Calculator builds a price from fees and target margin directly.

Should markup be applied to cost including shipping?

Yes - apply it to the landed cost (purchase price plus shipping, duty, and packaging). Marking up only the bare purchase price quietly gives away the freight, and on imported goods that can be the whole profit.

How is this different from a Growpins Ledger account?
