SWOT Analysis FAQ
What is a SWOT analysis?
A simple four-box view of a business: Strengths and Weaknesses look inward at what's true today; Opportunities and Threats look outward at the market around you. It's a starting framework for a planning conversation, not a scoring system - there's no total to compute.
How do I fill in a SWOT analysis for a small business?
Be specific, not generic. 'Fast turnaround on custom orders' is a strength you can act on; 'good quality' is not. For each quadrant, list 3-5 concrete points - fewer, sharper points beat a long vague list every time.
What's the difference between strengths and opportunities?
Strengths are true right now, inside your business - skills, assets, reputation. Opportunities are things happening outside it that you could exploit - a market gap, a new regulation, a competitor struggling. Confusing the two ('we're the market leader' as an opportunity) is the most common SWOT mistake.
What do I do with a SWOT analysis once it's filled in?
Pair strengths with opportunities to find your best moves, and pair weaknesses with threats to find your biggest risks. A SWOT that never leaves the page is just an exercise - the value is in the decision it leads to, like which opportunity to pursue first or which weakness to fix before a threat exploits it.
