VAT in Ghana: the basics

Ghana's standard VAT rate is 15%. In practice, most VAT-registered supplies also carry separate statutory levies - the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), the GETFund levy, and the COVID-19 levy - which sit alongside VAT and push the effective charge on many invoices above 20%.

Because the levies are calculated and shown separately from VAT, set this calculator to 15% for the VAT line and add the levies per current GRA guidance - the calculator's editable rate also lets you model the combined effect.

Smaller retailers may fall under the VAT Flat Rate Scheme instead of the standard regime. Which regime applies to you, and the current levy rates, are GRA questions - verify before you print them on an invoice.

Authoritative source: Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). Rates and thresholds change with new finance laws - when in doubt, the authority's current guidance wins.

Worked examples at 15%

Adding VAT: a GH₵10,000 net price x 15% = GH₵1,500 VAT, so the customer pays GH₵11,500 before levies.

Removing VAT: a GH₵11,500 VAT-inclusive price ÷ 1.15 = GH₵10,000 net, with GH₵1,500 of VAT inside it.

Ghana VAT FAQ

What is the VAT rate in Ghana?

The standard VAT rate is 15%. Most VAT-registered supplies also attract separate levies - NHIL, GETFund, and the COVID-19 levy - so the total addition on many invoices is above 20%. The levy structure has been the subject of reform proposals, so check current GRA guidance.

How do I calculate Ghana VAT?

For the VAT line alone: net price x 0.15, so GH₵10,000 becomes GH₵11,500. To extract VAT from an inclusive price, divide by 1.15. Levies are computed separately on top per GRA rules.

What is the VAT Flat Rate Scheme?

A simplified regime the GRA operates for qualifying smaller retailers and wholesalers, charging a flat percentage on sales instead of the standard VAT-plus-levies structure. Whether you qualify and the current flat rate are best confirmed directly with the GRA.

Who collects VAT in Ghana?

The Ghana Revenue Authority. VAT-registered businesses charge it on taxable supplies and file returns per the GRA's calendar - keeping per-invoice records of VAT charged makes those returns straightforward.
