VAT in Nigeria: the basics
Nigeria's standard VAT rate is 7.5%, in place since February 2020 and retained under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Registered businesses charge it on taxable goods and services and remit it with a monthly return.
A meaningful list of essentials is zero-rated or exempt - including many basic food items, medicines, and educational materials - and the 2025 reforms expanded that list. If you sell essentials, check your items against the current schedule before charging.
Small businesses below the registration threshold don't charge VAT at all. The threshold and the zero-rated schedule are exactly the kind of detail that changes with new regulations, so confirm your position with the Nigeria Revenue Service before relying on it.
Authoritative source: Nigeria Revenue Service (formerly FIRS). Rates and thresholds change with new finance laws - when in doubt, the authority's current guidance wins.
Worked examples at 7.5%
Adding VAT: a ₦100,000 net price x 7.5% = ₦7,500 VAT, so the customer pays ₦107,500.
Removing VAT: a ₦107,500 VAT-inclusive price ÷ 1.075 = ₦100,000 net, with ₦7,500 of VAT inside it.
Nigeria VAT FAQ
What is the VAT rate in Nigeria?
7.5% - the standard rate since February 2020, retained under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Many basic food items, medicines, and educational materials are zero-rated or exempt, and the 2025 reforms expanded the relief list.
How do I calculate 7.5% VAT?
To add it: net price x 0.075 gives the VAT, so ₦100,000 becomes ₦107,500. To remove it from an inclusive price: divide by 1.075, so ₦107,500 contains ₦7,500 of VAT - not ₦8,062, which is what wrongly subtracting 7.5% of the gross would give you.
Who must charge VAT in Nigeria?
VAT-registered businesses selling taxable goods and services. Small businesses under the registration threshold are exempt from charging it - confirm the current threshold with the Nigeria Revenue Service, as it was revised under the 2025 tax reforms.
When are Nigerian VAT returns filed?
Monthly, covering the previous month's transactions - traditionally due by the 21st of the following month. Growpins Ledger tracks the VAT you've charged per invoice, so the return figure is a report, not a reconstruction.
