VAT in South Africa: the basics

South Africa's standard VAT rate is 15%. A proposed increase in 2025 was withdrawn before taking effect, so 15% remains the rate to charge - a good reminder to verify the rate each budget season.

Registration as a VAT vendor is compulsory once taxable turnover passes R1 million in a 12-month period, with voluntary registration available below that. Vendors charge output VAT, reclaim input VAT, and file returns on the schedule SARS assigns.

A basket of basic foodstuffs is zero-rated, and consumer prices are generally advertised VAT-inclusive - which makes the extract direction of this calculator the one South African sellers use most.

Authoritative source: South African Revenue Service (SARS). Rates and thresholds change with new finance laws - when in doubt, the authority's current guidance wins.

Worked examples at 15%

Adding VAT: an R 20,000 net price x 15% = R 3,000 VAT, so the customer pays R 23,000.

Removing VAT: an R 23,000 VAT-inclusive price ÷ 1.15 = R 20,000 net, with R 3,000 of VAT inside it.

South Africa VAT FAQ

What is the VAT rate in South Africa?

15%. A planned increase announced in the 2025 budget was withdrawn before it took effect, so 15% remains the standard rate - always worth re-checking after each budget.

How do I calculate 15% VAT?

To add: net price x 0.15, so R 20,000 becomes R 23,000. To extract it from an inclusive price: divide by 1.15 - R 23,000 contains R 3,000 of VAT, not the R 3,450 you'd get by wrongly taking 15% of the gross.

Who must register for VAT in South Africa?

Registration is compulsory once taxable turnover exceeds R1 million in any 12-month period; businesses above R50,000 may register voluntarily. SARS assigns the filing schedule after registration.

Why do South African prices include VAT?

Consumer protection rules require advertised consumer prices to be VAT-inclusive. That's why sellers so often need the reverse calculation - pulling the VAT out of a display price to see the real net revenue.
